Frontal inversion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001089
A temperature inversion that occurs at the boundary between two air masses of different temperatures, typically found above a cold air mass where warmer air is overriding it. This stable layer inhibits vertical air movement and can trap pollutants or moisture below it. It is a common feature associated with warm fronts and occluded fronts.
A temperature inversion that develops aloft when warm air overruns the cold air behind a front.
