Air trap
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003389
A meteorological condition where a mass of air is confined horizontally by topography, such as in a valley or basin, and vertically by a stable atmospheric layer above. This situation inhibits vertical and horizontal mixing, leading to the accumulation of pollutants and moisture. Cold air drainage into a valley at night often creates a temperature inversion that traps the colder, denser air near the surface.
