Shear production

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008828

The process by which kinetic energy from the mean flow is converted into turbulent kinetic energy due to the presence of wind shear. This occurs when velocity gradients cause fluid parcels to rotate and mix, generating eddies. Shear production is a primary mechanism for the generation of atmospheric turbulence, particularly in the boundary layer and near jet streams.
