Shear ridge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008829
A pressure ridge in sea ice that forms primarily due to shear motion, where two ice floes or fields slide past each other. The crushing and piling of ice along the shear line creates a linear accumulation of broken ice blocks, which can extend both above and below the water surface. Unlike ridges formed purely by compression, a shear ridge is characterized by its alignment parallel to the direction of the relative motion between the ice masses.
