Upper-level ridge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009916

An elongated area of relatively high atmospheric pressure in the middle or upper troposphere, characterized by a poleward bulge in the contours of geopotential height. These ridges are associated with sinking air, clear skies, and stable atmospheric conditions. They often steer weather systems and can lead to prolonged periods of warm, dry weather at the surface.
