Upper-level trough

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009917

An elongated area of relatively low geopotential height in the upper atmosphere, indicating a dip in the pressure surfaces. These troughs are associated with cyclonic curvature of the airflow and often precede the development of surface low-pressure systems. They are a key feature in the dynamics of mid-latitude weather patterns.
