Cold trough

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004505

An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure and cold air aloft, often extending equatorward from a larger low-pressure system. These troughs are characterized by cyclonic curvature of the airflow and can lead to unstable atmospheric conditions, promoting cloud formation and precipitation. Unlike surface troughs, cold troughs are most pronounced in the middle and upper troposphere.
