Inverted trough

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006634

A trough of low atmospheric pressure that extends poleward from a low-pressure center, but with the pressure decreasing towards the center of the trough. Unlike typical troughs where pressure decreases towards the trough axis, an inverted trough has higher pressure along its axis than on either side. These features are often associated with specific patterns of upper-level flow and can influence precipitation distribution.
