Westerly trough
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010206
An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure that extends equatorward from a larger low-pressure system within the mid-latitude westerly wind belt. These troughs are associated with upward motion and often bring unsettled weather conditions. They are a common feature on upper-air charts, particularly at the 500-millibar level.
