Westerly wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010207
A wave-like disturbance in the mid-latitude westerly wind flow, characterized by alternating troughs and ridges in the atmospheric pressure field. These waves propagate eastward and are responsible for much of the day-to-day weather variability in temperate regions. They are often depicted on constant pressure charts, such as the 500 hPa level.
