Trough
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002872
An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure, with pressure lowest along the central axis and increasing on either side. It is represented on a weather map as a U-shaped or V-shaped extension of a low-pressure center, without a closed circulation. Troughs are associated with converging surface winds, upward air motion, and the formation of clouds and precipitation.
An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure, usually not associated with a closed circulation, and thus used to distinguish from a closed low. The opposite of ridge.
