Inverted barometer effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006633
The response of sea level to changes in atmospheric pressure, where a decrease in atmospheric pressure leads to a rise in sea level and an increase in pressure causes a fall in sea level. This effect occurs because the ocean surface adjusts to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium with the overlying atmospheric pressure. A 1 millibar decrease in atmospheric pressure typically results in a 1 centimeter rise in sea level.
