Lifting trough

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006940

A trough in the upper-level flow that is moving poleward and losing amplitude as it lifts out of the pattern, instead of deepening toward the equator. It is the opposite of a digging trough, which amplifies as its axis extends equatorward and cold air pushes south. Forecasters read a lifting trough as a weakening system, because the warm air to its south is able to push back northward.
