Cold top

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004504

The uppermost, coldest part of a convective cloud, particularly a cumulonimbus cloud, as observed from satellite infrared imagery. The temperature of the cloud top is inversely related to its height, so colder tops indicate higher and often more vigorous convection. Extremely cold cloud tops are frequently associated with intense thunderstorms and heavy precipitation.
