Radiative-convective equilibrium
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010704
A theoretical state of the atmosphere where the net radiative heating or cooling at each level is balanced by convective heat transport. In this equilibrium, the temperature profile is determined by the balance between absorbed solar radiation, emitted terrestrial radiation, and the vertical redistribution of heat by convection. This concept is used in climate models to understand atmospheric temperature structures.
