Upper-level cyclone

A low-pressure system in the middle or upper troposphere that is not directly associated with a surface low-pressure center. These systems are characterized by closed contours of geopotential height on upper-air charts. They often bring widespread cloudiness and precipitation, and can persist for several days, influencing weather patterns over large regions.
