Pressure ridge

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010685

An elongated area of relatively high atmospheric pressure, often extending from the center of a high-pressure system. It is characterized by diverging winds at the surface, fair weather, and sinking air, which inhibits cloud formation. On a weather map, a pressure ridge is depicted by isobars that are curved anticyclonically, forming a U-shape or a bulge away from the high-pressure center.
