Free water
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005760
Water present in a medium, such as soil or snowpack, that is not held by adhesive or cohesive forces to the particles of the medium. This water is able to move through the medium under the influence of gravity, contributing to runoff or groundwater recharge. In contrast, bound water is held in place by molecular attraction and is not available for gravitational flow.
