Free water

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001580

Water that exists in a reservoir rock and is not bound to the rock grains by capillary forces. This water is mobile and can flow under pressure, unlike irreducible water which remains adhered to the pore surfaces. It accumulates in the lowest portions of a reservoir due to gravity, forming an aquifer beneath the hydrocarbon column.
