Bound fluid
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000430
The portion of the pore fluid that is held in place by capillary forces or adsorbed on mineral surfaces and does not flow under normal reservoir pressure gradients. It includes clay-bound water, which is counted in total porosity but not in effective porosity, and capillary-bound irreducible water, which stays inside effective porosity but cannot be produced. NMR logs estimate the bound volume from the fast-decaying part of the T2 distribution below a cutoff, about 33 ms in sandstones and 92 ms in carbonates.
