Recharge area
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008442
A region of the land surface where precipitation and surface water infiltrate the ground and percolate downward to replenish an aquifer. The characteristics of a recharge area, such as its soil permeability and land cover, determine the rate and quality of water entering the groundwater system. In contrast, a discharge area is where groundwater flows to the surface, such as at a spring or into a river.
