Recharge capacity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008443
The maximum rate at which a land area can absorb precipitation and replenish underlying groundwater aquifers. This rate is governed by factors such as soil type, land cover, topography, and antecedent moisture conditions. Recharge capacity is expressed in units of volume per unit area per unit time, such as millimeters per day, and is greatly reduced by impervious surfaces like pavement and compacted soil.
