Free surface

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005758

The upper boundary of a fluid that is exposed to the atmosphere and is not constrained by a solid boundary. For oceans and lakes, this surface is subject to atmospheric pressure and wind stress, which drive wave generation and currents. The free surface of water bodies is a key interface for energy and mass exchange with the atmosphere.
