Free atmosphere

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001064

  1. The portion of the atmosphere situated above the planetary boundary layer, where the direct frictional effects of the Earth's surface are negligible. In this region, air motion is largely controlled by the balance between the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force. It extends upwards from approximately 1 to 2 kilometers above the surface.

  2. The part of the atmosphere that lies above the frictional influence of the earth's surface.
