Depth of frictional influence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004938

The vertical extent of the atmospheric boundary layer where the Earth's surface friction significantly impacts the wind flow. Within this layer, wind speed and direction are modified by drag, turbulence, and the Coriolis force, leading to a turning of the wind with height. This depth typically ranges from a few hundred meters to a few kilometers, depending on atmospheric stability and surface roughness.
