Frictional divergence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005793
The horizontal outflow of air near the surface from an area of high pressure, produced by friction. Friction slows the wind and weakens the Coriolis force, so the pressure gradient force turns the flow across the isobars from high toward low pressure. The outflow is fed by sinking air above, so frictional divergence in a surface anticyclone is linked with downward vertical motion and clear skies.
