Frictional drag
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005794
The resistive force exerted by the Earth's surface and obstacles on the moving air, which acts to slow down the wind. This force is a consequence of the transfer of momentum from the atmosphere to the surface through turbulent eddies. Its magnitude depends on the surface roughness, with forests and urban areas exerting greater drag than smooth water surfaces.
