Free streamline

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010514

A theoretical line in a fluid dynamics model that separates a region of moving fluid from a stagnant or much slower fluid body, with the defining characteristic that pressure is constant along its length. This concept is applied in idealized models of atmospheric flows, such as jets issuing into the atmosphere or the flow separating from an obstacle. The shape of the free streamline is not known in advance but is determined as part of the solution to the flow problem.
