Whaleback cloud
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010225
A type of smooth, elongated lenticular cloud that forms on the lee side of a mountain or mountain range. It is created by stable, moist air flowing over the terrain, which sets up a standing wave pattern in the atmosphere. The cloud appears stationary as air rises, cools, and condenses at its leading edge and then descends, warms, and evaporates at its trailing edge.
