Foehn cloud

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005670

A type of cloud, often lenticular or wave-shaped, that forms on the lee side of mountains due to the lifting and cooling of air as it encounters the mountain barrier, even as the air descends and warms further downwind. These clouds are indicative of a foehn wind event. They can appear as stationary, stacked layers.
