Contessa di vento

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010443

A stationary, lens-shaped or cap-like cloud that forms over the summit of Mount Etna in Sicily. This type of orographic cloud, a form of altocumulus lenticularis, is created when stable, moist air flows over the mountain, triggering a standing wave pattern. Locally, the appearance of the “countess of the wind” is traditionally interpreted as a sign of impending strong winds at the surface.
