Lenticularis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006919

A cloud species characterized by a distinct lens-shaped or almond-shaped appearance, with well-defined outlines. These clouds form when stable, moist air flows over mountains or other topographic barriers, creating standing waves in the atmosphere. Lenticular clouds, which can be of the genera cirrocumulus, altocumulus, or stratocumulus, appear stationary even with strong winds because they continuously form on the upwind side and dissipate on the downwind side.
