Standing wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009203

An oscillation pattern that remains in a constant position, created by the interference of two waves traveling in opposite directions. The wave appears to vibrate in place, with fixed points of minimum amplitude called nodes and points of maximum amplitude called antinodes. Atmospheric standing waves, known as stationary waves, are large-scale features that influence weather patterns for extended periods.
