Clapotis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004320
A non-breaking standing wave pattern formed in a body of water when a progressive surface wave train is reflected back on itself by a near-vertical boundary, such as a seawall or cliff. The interference between the incoming and reflected waves results in a wave that oscillates vertically in a fixed position, with minimal horizontal water movement. The height of the clapotis can be up to twice the amplitude of the original incident waves.
