Stationary eddies

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009225

Persistent, non-propagating disturbances in atmospheric flow that are fixed in geographical location, often forced by topography or land-sea temperature contrasts. These eddies contribute to the time-averaged atmospheric circulation and can significantly influence regional weather patterns. Examples include the quasi-stationary high-pressure systems over continents in winter.
