Stationary wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009230
A wave whose phase stays fixed relative to the ground, so its crests and troughs remain at the same places while the air flows through them. In the atmosphere such waves are forced by mountains or by land-sea heating contrasts and appear as steady lee waves or as the quasi-stationary troughs and ridges of the planetary circulation. A Rossby wave becomes stationary when its westward phase speed equals the eastward mean flow.
