Retrograde wave

A wave that propagates in a direction opposite to the mean flow of the medium in which it exists. In the atmosphere, this can occur with certain types of planetary waves or Rossby waves, which move westward relative to the eastward mean zonal flow. Such waves can influence long-range weather patterns.
