Mixed Rossby-gravity wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010624

An equatorially trapped wave that behaves like a Rossby wave at long zonal scales and like an inertia-gravity wave at short ones, also called a Yanai wave. Its crests move westward, with a period of about 4 to 5 days and a zonal wavelength near 10,000 kilometers, while its energy travels upward into the stratosphere. Its north-south wind peaks at the equator, where the east-west wind vanishes.
