Yanai wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010303
An equatorially trapped wave that propagates eastward and has characteristics of both a gravity wave and a Kelvin wave, also known as a mixed Rossby-gravity wave. These waves have their largest amplitude in the zonal wind component on the equator and in the meridional wind component off the equator. They are a component of the Madden-Julian Oscillation and are involved in the initiation of El Niño events.
