Zonal

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010854

Relating to a pattern of atmospheric motion that proceeds in an east-west direction, parallel to lines of latitude. A zonal flow exhibits minimal north-south (meridional) movement, leading to weather systems that travel quickly from west to east in the mid-latitudes. The strength of the zonal flow is measured by the zonal index, which compares atmospheric pressure at different latitudes.
