A quasi-periodic fluctuation in the strength and pattern of the atmospheric circulation, particularly in the mid-latitudes. It involves transitions between high-index states, characterized by strong zonal flow, and low-index states, marked by weaker zonal flow and more meridional (north-south) patterns. The duration of an index cycle can range from weeks to months.
