Retrogression

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002311

  1. The westward movement or displacement of an atmospheric feature, such as a trough or ridge, against the general eastward progression of weather systems. This phenomenon can lead to prolonged weather patterns in a particular region. It contrasts with the more common eastward progression of synoptic-scale features.

  2. (or Retrograde Motion) - Movement of a weather system in a direction opposite to that of the basic flow in which it is embedded, usually referring to a closed low or a longwave trough which moves westward.
