Retroreflection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008552
The reflection of radiation, particularly light, from a surface in which the reflected rays travel back along paths parallel to the incident rays. This process causes a surface to appear brightest when viewed from a position very close to the light source. Atmospheric optical phenomena such as the glory and heiligenschein are produced by retroreflection from water droplets or dew drops, and the principle is applied in lidar systems for remote sensing.
