Planetary wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007970
Large-scale atmospheric or oceanic waves that derive their restoring force from the variation of the Coriolis parameter with latitude. These waves, also known as Rossby waves, propagate westward relative to the mean flow and eastward relative to the ground. They are responsible for much of the large-scale weather patterns and transport of heat and momentum in the mid-latitudes.
