Foehn bank

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005669

A cloud formation, a synonym of foehn wall, that lies over and along a mountain ridge during a foehn episode and appears as a wall of cloud to an observer on the lee side. It forms from moist air rising up the windward slope and dissolves as the air descends and warms on the lee side, so it stays nearly stationary while strong wind passes through it. It marks the upper limit of precipitation on the windward slopes.
