North foehn
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007611
A warm, dry, and often gusty wind that descends the leeward side of a mountain range when moist air is forced to ascend the windward side from the north. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, releasing latent heat, then warms adiabatically as it descends. This phenomenon is common in the Alps, where it can lead to rapid temperature increases.
