South foehn

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009067

A warm, dry, and often gusty wind that descends the leeward side of a mountain range, specifically when the wind originates from the south. It results from the adiabatic warming of air as it descends after losing moisture on the windward side. The south foehn is a well-known phenomenon in the Alps, bringing rapid temperature increases.
