Foehn
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001033
A warm, dry, downslope wind that occurs on the leeward side of a mountain range. It results from the adiabatic warming of air as it descends after having lost much of its moisture on the windward side through orographic precipitation. This phenomenon is common in many mountainous regions worldwide, including the Alps and the Rocky Mountains.
A warm, dry wind on the lee side of a mountain range, the warmth and dryness of the air being due to adiabatic compression as the air descends the mountain slopes. In the United States, the term chinook is used for Foehn winds in the Rocky and Sierra mountains.
