Mountain wave
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001766
An atmospheric gravity wave that forms when stable air flows over a mountain range, creating oscillations in the air downwind. These waves can extend vertically into the stratosphere and horizontally for hundreds of kilometers. They are characterized by alternating updrafts and downdrafts, posing a hazard to aviation.
The wavelike effect, characterized by updrafts and downdrafts, that occurs above and behind a mountain range when rapidly flowing air encounters the mountain range's steep front.
