Kona cyclone
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006807
A non-frontal, cold-core low-pressure system that forms in the subtropics, particularly near the Hawaiian Islands, and brings heavy rainfall and strong winds. These cyclones develop when an upper-level trough interacts with a surface low, drawing moisture from the tropical Pacific. Kona cyclones can cause widespread flooding and coastal erosion, especially on the leeward sides of the islands, which are usually dry.
